Lachat MicroDIST methods for Ammonia and Phenol Considered Equivalent to EPA Methods for NPDES Reporting
Lachat is pleased to announce that methods for Ammonia and Phenol determination using MicroDIST as a sample preparation technique are equivalent to EPA accepted methods, as stated in the EPA-issued memo “Flexibility to Modify CWA Methods” (Nov. 20, 2007), a clarification statement to the March 2007 Method Update Rule. These methods may be used for NPDES reporting of these analytes.
The clarification memo states:
“Technologies allowed as alternatives under Part 136.6 include the following:”
Listed:
“Micro distillation apparatus”
“Changes are only allowed, if the modified method produces equivalent performance for the analyte(s) of interest, and the equivalent performance is documented.
EPA encourages regulatory authorities to allow flexibility in the spirit of method improvement.”
The Lachat MicroDIST methods impacted by this ruling:
E10-107-06-1-X, an Alkaline Phenol based method for Ammonia. This method has a range of 0.05 to 20.0 mg N/L, and a method detection limit of 0.007 mg N/L. It is equivalent to EPA method 350.1.
Also, for phenolics determination: E10-210-00-1-X and E10-210-00-1-Y. These are equivalent to EPA method 420.1. Their ranges are 0.005 to 0.2 mg phenol/L and 0.5 to 50 mg phenol/L, with MDL’s of 0.0034 mg phenol/L and 0.4 mg phenol/L, respectively.
In order to show that these MicroDIST methods are equivalent to a Part 136 method, the EPA has required that the method developer provide laboratories with a side-by-side method comparison table. Lachat has created these 2-column comparison tables for these MicroDIST methods (as well as other Part 136 equivalent methods), with all of the specified information that the EPA requires to show equivalency.
Lachat side by side comparisons:
10-107-06-1-X | 10-210-00-1-X
